"Refugerminate is an installation inspired by the research at The University of Sheffield, led by Professor Tony Ryan, Professor Duncan Cameron and PHD researcher Harry Wright, who are developing a synthetic foam growing substrate for use in the cultivation of high value horticultural crops, in places with little arable soil. The installation featured several 'toys', including 'Teddy', sculpted and moulded by Anthony, then cast employing the innovative polymer based foam developed by Harry, who then planted the sculptures with seeds. The sculpture references objects familiar to refugee children eg a teddy bear. The concept: can the artworks, be 'deployed' at Zaatari refugee camp (Jordan), to encourage youngsters with no experience of subsistence farming, to grow vegetables alongside their elders, giving them skills for when they return to their homeland, skills which they will then be reliant upon."
